Mr. S. M. Gupta is basically a Teacher and a Guru to most of the Company Secretaries of younger generation and hence he is popularly called by all his students and also others as SIR. Many of his students after becoming Company Secretaries have assumed high positions in Big Corporate Houses and have also held various positions in other fields.

Sir is the founder President of National Company Law Tribunal Kolkata Bar Association (NCLTKBA).

Sir was the President of the Association of Corporate Advisers & Executives (ACAE) in the Year 2007-08 which has more than 1300 Chartered Accountants/Company Secretaries/Other Professionals and Industrialists as its members. This Association has celebrated 60 years of its existence in the year 2020. This association has initiated and established the First Annual Corporate Awards in West Bengal in association with The Economic Times, popularly known as "ET Bengal Corporate Awards" which has recognized achievement of Corporate Bengal for the past 7 years. This is the flagship event and the Association is now known for this Programme.

Sir was also Chairman of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, Eastern India Regional Council (Year 1992-1993).

Sir is a Commerce and Law Graduate from Calcutta University.

Sir is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. 

Sir was invited as Guest Faculty by :-
1. Heritage Law School, Kolkata
2. Insolvency Professional Agency of Institute of Cost Accountants of India.

Sir is a member of Association of Secretaries and Managers, Member of All India Management Association and Calcutta Management Association.

Sir is the Convener of Calcutta Study Circle on Corporate Law and Allied Subjects which has found place in the LIMCA book of records for being the longest continuing Study Circle in India.

Sir is also a Life Member of the Consumer Unity and Trust Society.

Sir is member of the Company Law and Taxation Standing Committee of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, member of the Corporate Law and Governance Standing Committee of the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and member of the Company Affairs Sub-Committee of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry for several years.

His name finds place in the ‘Reference India - Biographical Notes about Men and Women of Achievement of today and tomorrow.'

Sir was a delegate from India at the Nepal Investment Forum held at Katmandu and organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and His Majesty's Govt. of Nepal.

Sir was invited to make a presentation on the topic “Dematerialisation of Securities - The Indian Scenario” at an International Seminar held at Bangkok (Thailand).

Sir was also invited to speak on "Corporate Laws in the International Perspective" at an International Seminar held at Malaysia and Singapore.

Sir has contributed articles in different publications including the Chartered Accountant, the Chartered Secretary and the Indian Management.

Sir was an examiner and is a visiting faculty at the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI).

Sir was also a faculty at the training programme(s) organised by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs for its officers as also by the Office of the Principal Director of Commercial Audit and ex-officio Member, Audit Board, Government of India.

His career with the industry includes 10 years as Commercial Manager and 15 years of service as Company Secretary and Law officer of large Industrial Enterprises. Presently, sir is doing his own practice as a Whole time Company Secretary rendering consultancy services to multinational companies, Banks and other corporate clients since 1992.

Sir was awarded the Krishnadhan Bhabani Bhaduri Memorial Medal - an award instituted by Direct Taxes Professionals' Association, Kolkata for Best Article on Corporate Laws for 3 years (2000, 2001 and 2006) on the subjects - Investors' Protection under Corporate Laws, Corporate Governance and Critical Appraisal of New Clause 49 of the Listing Agreement respectively.

Sir was a panelist at a T. V. programme on 'Dematerialisation of Securities' produced by the Ministry of Company Affairs and telecast in the whole country by Door Darshan.

Sir is also an Arbitrator on the Kolkata Arbitral Panel of the Bombay Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange, Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India Limited, Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. and National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited.

Sir was part of a 2 Member team which appeared on behalf of a Chamber of Commerce before Raghavan Committee constituted by the Govt. of India on Competition Policy and Law. The Committee had come to Calcutta for Public hearings.

Sir is Co-Author of a book "Company Law - Problems and Solutions" published by Calcutta Study Circle on Corporate Law and Allied Subjects. The foreword of this book was written by the Hon'ble Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.

Sir was presented an Award by Mr. Salman Khurshid, Hon'ble Minister, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Govt. of India for Second Best Article published in "Chartered Secretary" on All-India basis.

Sir was a Member of the "Expert Advisory Board" constituted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, New Delhi for two years.

Sir was a Member of the "Secretarial Standards Board" constituted by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India, New Delhi.

Sir  is a widely travelled person in India and abroad including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangkok, Singapore, Malaysia and several European Countries. He particularly visited London and Scotland (Edinburgh and Glasgow). Sir is a keen traveller and has lot of interest in Art and Culture.

Sir is a vivid reader and likes to read books on all subjects.

Sir has interest in learning languages and apart from his mother tongue Marwari he can also fluently speak Bengali, Oriya and of course English and Hindi.
